Residents > The Gilroy Girls

"The Gilroy Girls" are a group of White Leghorn Chickens that came to the sanctuary from an egg laying plant in Gilroy, CA. The plant was being shut down and the owners were sending 160,000 chickens to slaughter. Kim Sturla from Animal Place in Vacaville coordinated a rescue and they were able to place about 1200 in different facilities/sanctuaries.

The chickens came to us in very poor shape. Most were covered in urine and feces with most of their feathers broken, damaged and missing. Their beaks had been chopped off so they wouldn't peck each other while they are housed in the incredibly small battery cages. They are packed in 10 to a cage which will not allow for movement or spreading their wings. Some of our girls have eyes that were damaged (burned) from the abundance of ammonia in the buildings and their nails were at least 3 to 4 inches long and curled. The combs on top of their head were pale and flopped over. They had never walked on the ground, never taken a dust bath and they never had room to move or spread their wings. Our "Gilroy Girls" have adapted well and are growing stronger every day.
