Clare, a rabbit recently surrendered at Oakland Animal Services, knows that ear infections are no good. What’s even worse is an abscess hijacking your ear. Yuck, yuck and yuck.
Over the weekend, Clare joined the Harvest Home family (Note: We are not the mob.) Happily recovering from infection, she is settling in at a foster home in Alameda.
Thoughtful-Statement-of-the-Day: A happy rabbit is always an abscess-free rabbit.

Clare has now been in foster care for four days. The goal is to resolve a recurring internal abscess that’s below the base of her left ear. It partially drains into the ear canal on its own, plus it’s being manually expressed, drained and cleaned every-other-day. The process is uncomfortable for her, even through she’s given a little Metacam 30 minutes before the procedure, but she’s being a real trooper about it.
Dr. Harvey has her on two antibiotics: TMS and Doxycycline, PO BID. She’s also have a salve applied to her ear canal.
Clare is a sweet and gentle little girl. Although somewhat shy, she’s easy to handle and loves to snuggle. She gets playtime and grass-gazing time every afternoon, and has made friends with another foster bunny named Violet. In a future blog update, we’ll show you a photo of the two of them.
Clare’s veterinary expenses are being paid through donations to Harvest Home’s medical fund. If you’d like to help, please contact Karen by email [ karen@harvesthomeanimal.org ].
