October is a beautiful time of year in the San Joaquin Valley. What better way to celebrate autumn than have a party at the farm. Earlier this month, Harvest Home and East Bay Animal Advocates hosted a book-signing celebration in honor of the release of Why Animals Matter. Nearly forty folks turned out to meet the authors of the book: Erin E. Williams and Margo DeMello. Thanks to everyone’s support at the event over $1,000 was raised for animal care and rescue work at Harvest Home.
What’s with this new book, huh? Good question!
Why Animals Matter looks at the myriad ways in which we use animals, and why their exploitation should matter to all people. Booklist reports on the new book: “…the treatment of animals in modern America is full of contradictions. Although we lavish time, money, and love on our pets, we allow the animals raised for our consumption (either as food, product testers, or medical experiment subjects) to languish in sometimes appalling conditions. The authors’ goal is to demystify these realities and show how the animal industries maximize profits and cut costs in ways that cause human and animal misery.”
