Snowflake (read all about her in her previous blog entry) will be a “Featured Foster” at the House Rabbit Society’s adoption center in Richmond now through Saturday, January 30th. Stop by and meet her, or better yet, give her the forever home she’s patiently waiting for! She’s very sweet and people oriented, and loves being stroked and petted.
The House Rabbit Society is located at 148 Broadway in Richmond (2 blocks east of Carlson). Phone 510-970-7575. The Rabbit Center is open Tuesday thru Sunday from 12 to 5. Ask the staff or a volunteer to show you where her cage is.

Snowflake was brought to the City of Alameda Animal Shelter in late September 2009 after her owner moved away and literally left her behind. The shelter staff noticed she had suffered some sort of old trauma to her tail and rectal area, including having a rectal prolapse, and made arrangements to transfer her to Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary so she could be placed in a foster home and receive veterinary care from Dr. Carolynn Harvey at Chabot Veterinary Clinic in Hayward.
Dr. Harvey’s diagnosis was that something apparently grabbed Snowflake’s tail, or it got caught in something, causing the bone structure to twist, leaving her tail at the 3 o’clock position instead of the 12 o’clock position. Her rectal area was badly inflamed, and the damage was preventing her from urinating and defecating normally. Oral and topical medications were started to relieve the inflammation, then on 10/29/2009 Dr. Harvey performed reconstructive surgery to rebuild her rectal area. It was also decided to remove the remaining stub of Snowflake’s tail. The surgery was 100% successful, and everything now functions normally even though her rectal area looks somewhat different from that of a “normal” rabbit. Following recuperation, Snowflake entered Harvest Home’s adoption program (although she continued to stay with her foster family). Dr. Harvey has confirmed that Snowflake has been spayed.
Snowflake is a very sweet and gentle bunny, and loves human interaction. She likes to be held, snuggled and petted, although she prefers not to be placed on her back (possibly because of her rectal injury). She has great litterbox habits and has a healthy appetite. And, she loves to give kisses!

Remember sad Miss Clare? Clare with the terrible ear condition and multiple surgeries? Well, after the loving care of her foster dad, she has been adopted into a new home with a wonderful boyfriend. From Clare’s new mom:
“Both Arlo and I are so grateful for everyone who came through for Clare to allow her to eventually live with us. Arlo was such a bad tempered bunny after his last attempt to have a bunny girlfriend (she beat him up), and now he’s much sweeter. I would swear he understands that Clare has some limitations – he seems to be always trying to egg her on to run faster, leap higher, explore further. They sleep cheek to cheek. When Clare’s ear is cleaned and her face is wet, she presses it into Arlo as her personal hair dryer. Clare is getting noticably stronger, chubbier, and more willful. She’s very cooperative about having her ears cleaned, but she can now outrun me when she knows that the process is about to get started. She eats with gusto — especially dandilions, cilantro, and carrots. She discovered applesauce that was left out the other day, and ran up to me with a applesaucy covered face. It’s now her post-ear-cleaning treat (just a little bit). She and Arlo are still trying to figure out how to groom each other — they both want to be first to get kisses — but Arlo takes good care of her ouchy ear and the eye that she can’t blink. Sometimes she humps his face, but he doesn’t seem to mind. I enjoy having her around so much; she’ll sleep on the couch with me, a really rare bunny treat! Hopefully y’all can see from the pictures what a happy healthy bunny she is!”
Here’s Clare receiving a little sugar from her boyfriend Arlo!
